Post-Surgery Diet Chart (Indian)

Accelerate your recovery, heal wounds faster, and rebuild your strength with a clinically approved, high-protein post-operative diet.

Eating for Recovery

Undergoing surgery is a massive trauma to the body. After an operation, your body enters a highly metabolic state—it needs significantly more calories and specific nutrients to repair damaged tissues, fight off potential infections, and recover from blood loss.

At the same time, your digestive system may be sluggish due to anesthesia and pain medications. This means your diet must strike a delicate balance: it must be exceptionally high in protein and vitamins for wound healing, but soft, non-spicy, and easy to digest to prevent gastrointestinal distress.

Your 7-Day Post-Op Recovery Plan

NOTE: This is a general 'Solid Food' diet plan. If you had gastrointestinal (stomach/intestine) surgery, you MUST strictly follow your surgeon's specific clear-liquid/soft-diet protocols.

Breakfast

Oatmeal cooked in milk with a pinch of turmeric and honey + 1 boiled egg.

Lunch

2 soft rotis + 1 bowl of thin moong dal + 1 cup mashed lauki (bottle gourd) sabzi.

Evening Snack

1 cup of fresh orange juice (Vitamin C for wound healing).

Dinner

Light vegetable soup + 1 bowl of moong dal khichdi.

Foods to Embrace

  • High Protein (Tissue Repair): Eggs, chicken broth, lean chicken, fish, paneer, thick dals.
  • Vitamin C (Wound Healing): Oranges, sweet limes (mosambi), lemon water, amla.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Turmeric (Haldi), ginger, garlic.
  • Soft Fiber (To prevent constipation): Oats, dalia, cooked vegetables, papaya.
  • Probiotics (Gut Health after Antibiotics): Fresh curd, buttermilk (chaas).

Foods to Strictly Avoid

  • Spicy & Oily Foods: Will cause severe acidity and indigestion in a sluggish gut.
  • Refined Sugars: Sugar actively suppresses the immune system and increases inflammation, slowing down healing.
  • Hard/Crunchy Foods: Can be difficult to digest immediately post-op.
  • Excessive Caffeine & Alcohol: Dehydrates the body and interferes with pain medications.
  • Gas-Producing Foods: Avoid heavy chole, rajma (unless very well mashed), and cabbage in the first few days if you feel bloated.

Key Nutrients to Focus On

Protein is the absolute most important nutrient right now. Your body cannot rebuild skin, muscle, and blood vessels without it. Vitamin C and Zinc are critical for the formation of collagen (the protein that heals incisions and wounds). Lastly, Iron is essential to replenish red blood cells, especially if you experienced blood loss during the procedure.

Expert Surgical Care & Follow-Up

A successful surgery is only half the battle; proper post-operative care and rehabilitation dictate how well you recover. If you experience fever, sudden severe pain, or redness around your incision site, contact your surgeon immediately.

The General Surgery and Orthopaedics departments at Prakash Hospital provide comprehensive, round-the-clock post-operative monitoring and physical therapy to get you back on your feet safely.
