Vitamin K: The Clotting & Bone Director

Understand how Vitamin K stops bleeding, directs calcium into your skeleton, and discover the top leafy green sources in the Indian diet.

Why Vitamin K is the Master of Calcium and Clots

The "K" in Vitamin K actually stands for *Koagulation* (the German word for blood clotting), which hints at its most famous, life-saving job. Whenever you get a papercut or scrape your knee, Vitamin K rushes to the scene to activate the proteins necessary to form a clot. Without it, even a minor cut could cause you to bleed to death. But beyond stopping bleeding, Vitamin K has a lesser-known, equally critical function: it acts as a traffic director for Calcium. While Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, Vitamin K ensures that calcium goes specifically into your bones and teeth, rather than hardening and clogging up your arteries. As a fat-soluble vitamin, you must consume it alongside dietary fats (like cooking your greens in a little oil) for it to be absorbed efficiently.

Daily Recommended Intake (RDA)

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends:

Adult Men120 µg/day
Adult Women90 µg/day

*Because it is abundant in vegetables and bacteria in your large intestine produce small amounts of it, deficiency in healthy adults is rare.

Top 10 Indian Food Sources

Dark green leafy vegetables are the undisputed kings of Vitamin K1. Remember to lightly cook these greens with a healthy fat (like a tadka of ghee or oil) to maximize absorption.

Deficiency Symptoms

Deficiency is rare but can occur in individuals taking broad-spectrum antibiotics (which kill the K-producing bacteria in the gut) or those with fat malabsorption diseases.

  • Excessive Bleeding & Easy Bruising

The primary symptom. Minor cuts take unusually long to stop bleeding, gums bleed easily, and large bruises appear from slight impacts.

  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Women may experience abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual periods due to the lack of clotting factors.

  • Decreased Bone Density (Long Term)

Chronic low levels of Vitamin K lead to calcium accumulating in arteries instead of bones, significantly increasing the risk of osteoporosis.

Excess & Toxicity Risks

Remarkably, even though it is a fat-soluble vitamin, there is no known toxicity associated with high intakes of Vitamin K (K1 or K2) from food or supplements in healthy individuals.

  • Unlike other fat-soluble vitamins, the body metabolizes and excretes Vitamin K very rapidly, preventing it from building up to dangerous levels.
  • The Exception: If you are taking anticoagulant drugs (blood thinners like Warfarin), consuming high amounts of Vitamin K will counteract the medication and could lead to a life-threatening blood clot.

When to See a Doctor

If you notice that minor cuts bleed profusely for a long time, or if you develop large bruises without any known injury, you must seek immediate medical evaluation. Coagulation issues can stem from Vitamin K deficiency or more serious hematological conditions.

If you are on prescription blood thinners, never change your dietary intake of leafy greens without consulting your doctor. At Prakash Hospital, our Internal Medicine and Cardiology teams will conduct regular Prothrombin Time (PT/INR) tests to carefully balance your medication dosage with your diet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Vitamin K Foods & Benefits at Prakash Hospital Noida.

Why do newborn babies receive a Vitamin K injection?

Babies are born with very low levels of Vitamin K because it does not cross the placenta well, and breast milk contains very little. Without a routine prophylactic Vitamin K injection at birth, infants are at a high risk of developing a rare but fatal bleeding disorder called Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB).

Should I avoid Vitamin K if I take blood thinners?

If you are on blood-thinning medication (like Warfarin/Coumadin), you should not completely avoid Vitamin K. Instead, you must keep your daily intake of Vitamin K incredibly consistent. Sudden spikes or drops in your Vitamin K intake can dangerously disrupt the effectiveness of your medication.

What is the difference between Vitamin K1 and K2?

Vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone) is found mostly in dark leafy greens and is primarily responsible for blood clotting. Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone) is found in fermented foods and animal products, and plays a more prominent role in directing calcium into your bones rather than your arteries.
