As winter sets in with its warmth and comfort, it also brings along the season of sneezes, sore throats and infections. The drop in temperature weakens our immune system, making us more prone to colds and flu. However, with some simple lifestyle changes, you can enjoy the winter season without having to reach for tissues or cough syrup!
When temperatures go down, cold air has a tendency to dry the nasal passages and lower their ability to trap and filter germs. This allows viruses to easily enter the body. Being in indoor places that are poorly ventilated tends to spread illnesses such as flu and common cold. Shorter daytime hours decrease our exposure to sun rays, decreasing our vitamin D levels which is a critical vitamin for a healthy immune system. This makes us more vulnerable to falling sick during winters.
Fact: Cold weather itself won't get you sick, viruses will. However, exposure to cold temperatures can dry out your nasal passages so it makes you more vulnerable to viruses getting in.
Fact: Even though you may not be thirsty, your body still needs water. Being hydrated keeps your immune system healthy.

Fact: Colds and flu are caused by viruses, while antibiotics target bacteria. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can do more harm than good by contributing to antibiotic resistance. Always consult a doctor before using them.
Fact: The flu virus mutates slightly every year and that is why vaccinations are encouraged annually. Receiving your shot annually lowers your chances of getting severely ill and protects others around you.
Fact: Healthy people can also get infected if precautions are not taken. Practising hygiene, resting properly and eating a balanced diet keeps your immunity strong irrespective of your age or health condition.
Your immune system acts as a defence barrier to fight infections. A nutrient dense diet is crucial to maintain its strength. Fruits such as oranges and guavas that are in season contain Vitamin C and foods including eggs and fortified milk have Vitamin D. Remember to consume lots of fluids like warm water, herbal teas or homemade soup. Keeping your body active during the day with walks or light workouts can help keep the body warm which enhances immunity.
To avoid infections from spreading around, wash your hands frequently with water and soap and sanitise your hands when needed. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands particularly after going out in public. Clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces such as door handles and phone screens. In case someone around you is ill, try maintaining a safe distance from them and consider wearing a mask when you are in crowded areas.

Layering to stay warm is a fun way to regulate your body temperature as well as keep up with winter fashion. Dress appropriately for the season by keeping ears, neck and feet covered before going out. Do not subject yourself to drastic temperature changes such as going from a heated room directly into cold air without the right apparel.
Cold winter weather can dry out skin and irritate your respiratory tract. Humidifiers indoors can restore moisture levels. Use a gentle moisturiser to prevent dry or itchy skin. Regular steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil can clear congestion from the nasal passage.
A critical step towards repairing and restoring your immune system is adequate sleep. Aim to rest 7-8 hours each night. Try maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, including weekends. Lack of sleep makes you vulnerable to infections and influences your mood, energy and well being.
