Angioplasty Surgery (PTCA)

Expert surgical and medical interventions delivered with compassionate, patient-first care to help you regain your health and quality of life.

Overview

Your heart works tirelessly, pumping life-giving blood to every corner of your body. But when the arteries that supply blood to your heart become narrowed or blocked by a buildup of cholesterol and plaque, your heart struggles to get the oxygen it desperately needs. This can cause severe chest pain (angina) or even lead to a life-threatening heart attack.

**Angioplasty** (Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, or PTCA) is a minimally invasive, life-saving procedure used to gently open these blocked arteries and restore healthy blood flow.

Our experienced cardiology team at Prakash Hospital performs this delicate procedure with precision, often providing immediate relief from symptoms and protecting your heart from future damage.

Why is it Done?

Angioplasty is usually recommended if you have Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Our cardiologists might suggest this procedure if:
  • You are suffering from persistent chest pain or shortness of breath that isn't responding to medications.
  • An angiography has revealed severe narrowing in one or more of your heart's major arteries.
  • Emergency Situation: You are actively having a heart attack. In this critical moment, an emergency angioplasty can rapidly restore blood flow, minimizing heart muscle damage and saving your life.

What to Expect

Before the Procedure: We will review your medical history, perform blood tests, and prepare you emotionally and physically. You'll be given a mild sedative to help you relax, but you will remain awake during the procedure.

During the Procedure: Our cardiologist will carefully guide a thin, flexible tube (catheter) through a blood vessel in your wrist or groin up to your heart. A tiny balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated at the site of the blockage, pushing the plaque against the artery walls and widening the path. In most cases, a small wire mesh tube called a **stent** is left in place to keep the artery permanently propped open.

Because there are no major incisions, the procedure is surprisingly quick—usually taking between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Risks & Benefits

The Benefits:

Angioplasty provides rapid relief from angina symptoms. If performed during a heart attack, it is the most effective way to stop the attack and prevent permanent heart failure.

Understanding the Risks:

While angioplasty is a routine and safe procedure, rare risks include bleeding at the catheter insertion site, damage to the blood vessel, or the artery re-narrowing over time. Our team closely monitors you throughout to ensure absolute safety.

Recovery Profile

One of the biggest advantages of angioplasty is the incredibly fast recovery time compared to open-heart surgery.

If you had a planned angioplasty, you will typically stay in the hospital overnight for observation and go home the next day. You'll need to drink plenty of fluids to help your kidneys flush out the contrast dye used during the procedure.

You can usually return to work and light activities within a week. However, the most crucial part of your recovery is committing to a heart-healthy lifestyle: taking prescribed blood thinners without fail, quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in light exercise to protect your newly opened arteries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is angioplasty considered a major open-heart surgery?

No. Angioplasty is minimally invasive. We do not open your chest. We access your heart through a tiny puncture in your wrist or groin, which means significantly less pain and a much faster recovery.

Will the stent stay in my body forever?

Yes, the stent is a permanent implant designed to provide long-term support to your artery wall. Over time, your artery's natural lining will grow over the stent.

Can an artery get blocked again after a stent is placed?

Yes, it is possible for plaque to build up again if you do not manage your cholesterol, blood pressure, and lifestyle. Taking your prescribed medications strictly and following a healthy diet is critical.
