Spine Surgery (Discectomy / Laminectomy)

Expert surgical and medical interventions delivered with compassionate, patient-first care to help you regain your health and quality of life.

Overview

When a problem in your spine compresses the delicate spinal cord or the nerves exiting the spine, the result is often excruciating pain, numbness, or weakness that shoots down your arms or legs. This is commonly known as sciatica when it affects the legs.

**Spine Surgery (specifically Discectomy or Laminectomy)** is designed to physically remove the pressure from these nerves, providing rapid and lasting relief from debilitating nerve pain.

At Prakash Hospital, our spine specialists utilize advanced microsurgical techniques, operating through tiny incisions with high-powered microscopes to safely decompress your nerves while preserving the structural stability of your spine.

Why is it Done?

While most back pain can be treated with physical therapy and medications, surgery is strongly considered when nerve compression is severe. Common indications include:
  • Herniated (Slipped) Disc: The soft jelly-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in its outer ring, directly pressing on a nerve root.
  • Spinal Stenosis: The narrowing of the spinal canal (often due to bone spurs and aging), which chokes the spinal cord.
  • Progressive Neurological Deficits: If you are experiencing rapidly worsening weakness in your legs, or loss of bowel/bladder control, emergency spine surgery is required.

What to Expect

A Discectomy targets a herniated disc. Through a small incision in the back, the surgeon removes only the portion of the disc that is protruding and compressing the nerve, leaving the rest of the healthy disc intact.

A Laminectomy targets spinal stenosis. The surgeon removes the lamina (the bony roof of the spinal canal) and any bone spurs to create more space for the cramped spinal cord and nerves.

During the Procedure: You will be under general anesthesia. Depending on whether it is a microdiscectomy or a more extensive laminectomy, the surgery takes 1 to 3 hours. We utilize continuous nerve monitoring throughout the procedure to ensure the utmost safety of your spinal cord.

Risks & Benefits

The Benefits:

Decompression surgery is incredibly effective at relieving the sharp, shooting nerve pain (sciatica) traveling down the leg or arm. Patients often wake up from surgery noticing the leg pain is instantly gone.

Understanding the Risks:

Risks include infection, bleeding, dural tear (a leak of the spinal fluid), or nerve damage. However, in the hands of our experienced spine surgeons, these complication rates are extremely low.

Recovery Profile

Recovery is remarkably fast for a microdiscectomy. Many patients walk within hours of waking up and can go home the same day or the next morning.

You will be instructed to avoid bending, lifting (anything heavier than 5 lbs), and twisting for the first 4 to 6 weeks. Walking is the best exercise during the early recovery phase.

While the nerve pain in the leg usually disappears immediately, any numbness or weakness may take weeks or months to resolve as the nerve slowly heals from being crushed. A structured physical therapy program will begin a few weeks post-surgery to strengthen your core and back muscles, protecting your spine for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to stay in bed for weeks after spine surgery?

Absolutely not. In fact, prolonged bed rest is harmful. We will have you up and walking the very same day of surgery to promote blood flow and healing.

Will spine surgery cure my general lower back pain?

Not necessarily. Discectomy and Laminectomy are highly effective at curing leg pain/sciatica caused by nerve compression. They are less predictable at curing general, dull, aching back pain caused by muscle spasms or arthritis.
