GFR Calculator — Calculate Your Glomerular Filtration Rate

Determine your estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) instantly. Input your serum creatinine, age, and gender to clinically assess your kidney function.

Your Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is widely considered by medical professionals to be the single most important and accurate overall indicator of your kidney function. Within your kidneys are millions of tiny filtering units called glomeruli, which act as microscopic sieves to remove toxins, excess fluids, and metabolic waste from your bloodstream. The GFR calculation determines exactly how many milliliters of blood these glomeruli can clean per minute (adjusted for standard body surface area). Because chronic kidney damage often occurs silently—without any noticeable physical pain or symptoms until the very late stages—routine screening with a GFR calculator is vital. Our tool utilizes the globally accepted CKD-EPI (2021) equation to help you identify early signs of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) so you can take preventative action.

Calculate Your GFR

The CKD-EPI equation is validated for adults aged 18 and older.

Obtained from your latest blood chemistry panel or kidney function test (KFT).

Awaiting Inputs

Please input your gender, age, and serum creatinine level on the left to calculate your Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR).

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate your eGFR, you will need the results of a recent blood test (specifically your Serum Creatinine level). Follow these steps:

  1. Enter Your Serum Creatinine: Find the creatinine value on your blood test report. Select the correct unit (mg/dL is standard in India/US; µmol/L is standard in the UK/Australia) and enter the number.
  2. Enter Your Age: Kidney function naturally declines as you get older, so age is a critical variable in the CKD-EPI equation.
  3. Select Biological Sex: Men typically have higher muscle mass than women, which produces more baseline creatinine. Selecting gender adjusts the formula for these physiological differences.
  4. Calculate: The tool will output your eGFR in mL/min/1.73m² and indicate your current CKD stage.

What Your Result Means

Your calculated eGFR places your kidney function into one of five standard clinical stages. Lower GFR numbers represent higher degrees of kidney impairment and toxin buildup in the blood:

CKD StageeGFR Range (mL/min)Clinical MeaningAction Plan / Follow Up
Stage 1≥ 90Normal or high kidney function with minor kidney damage signs (if present)Monitor periodically, manage glucose and blood pressure if diabetic/hypertensive
Stage 260 – 89Mildly decreased kidney function, often associated with healthy agingCheck creatinine once a year, control cardiovascular risk factors
Stage 3a45 – 59Mildly to moderately decreased kidney functionConsult a nephrologist, review medications, avoid NSAID pain relievers
Stage 3b30 – 44Moderately to severely decreased kidney functionNephrology monitoring, review diet for sodium/potassium restrictions
Stage 415 – 29Severely decreased kidney functionUrgent nephrologist consultation, discuss prep for dialysis or transplant
Stage 5< 15Kidney failure (End-Stage Renal Disease)Immediate clinical care, renal replacement therapy (Dialysis/Transplant)

When to See a Doctor

If your calculation reveals a GFR of less than 60 for three consecutive months, you are clinically diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and must see a specialist immediately. Furthermore, if your low GFR is accompanied by physical symptoms such as severe swelling in the ankles (edema), chronic fatigue, metallic taste in the mouth, or foamy/bloody urine, do not wait—seek emergency medical evaluation.

At Prakash Hospital, our Nephrology Department offers comprehensive renal care, from early conservative management of Stage 3 CKD to advanced hemodialysis and kidney transplant support. Our multidisciplinary team will help you manage the root causes of kidney decline, such as hypertension and unmanaged diabetes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about your GFR calculation at Prakash Hospital Noida.

What is the difference between GFR and creatinine?

Creatinine is a chemical waste product generated by muscle metabolism, measured directly via blood test. GFR is a calculated estimate of how much blood your kidneys filter, using your creatinine value, age, and gender.

Why doesn't the calculator ask for race anymore?

The clinical standard CKD-EPI equation was updated in 2021 to remove the race coefficient. This update ensures more equitable, race-free diagnostic assessments of kidney function globally, avoiding delays in kidney specialist referrals and transplant eligibility.

Can a low GFR score return to normal?

In acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by temporary factors like dehydration or infection, GFR can return to normal once the acute cause is resolved. For Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), GFR cannot usually be reversed, but medical treatment focuses on preventing further decline.
