Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, divided into three trimesters. Each phase brings its own changes, concerns, and adjustments. The right care during pregnancy makes the difference between a smooth experience and a complicated one. Most of it is sensible, undramatic, and based on a few core habits applied consistently.
This is a practical guide to taking care of yourself during pregnancy, covering exercise, sleep, work, mental health, common discomforts, and warning signs that need attention.
Regular check-ups are the backbone of pregnancy care. Most gynecologists in India follow this schedule:
Each visit usually includes weight, blood pressure, urine test, fetal heartbeat check, and discussion of any concerns. Specific tests are done at certain points:
Do not skip these visits, even when everything feels fine. They catch problems early.
Most pregnancies in India need several supplements:
Take supplements as prescribed. Iron is best taken on an empty stomach or with a vitamin C source, away from milk and tea which reduce absorption.
Most pregnancies allow safe exercise, and women who exercise tend to have easier pregnancies, easier labours, and faster recoveries. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends about 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.
If you were not exercising before pregnancy, start gently with short walks and build up. If you were exercising regularly, you can usually continue with modifications. Talk to your gynecologist about what is appropriate for your situation.
Sleep changes during pregnancy. The first trimester often brings extreme tiredness. The second trimester usually allows decent sleep. The third trimester gets uncomfortable as the bump grows.
Aim for 7 to 9 hours a night. Daytime naps are fine if you need them.
Most women can continue working through most of pregnancy. A few adjustments help:
Some workplaces require modifications. Jobs involving heavy physical labour, prolonged standing, exposure to chemicals or radiation, or extended work hours may need adjustment. Discuss with your doctor and employer.
Plan for maternity leave well in advance. In India, eligible women get 26 weeks of paid maternity leave under the Maternity Benefit Act.
The second trimester is generally the safest for travel. Restrictions:
Discuss any planned travel with your doctor, especially after 28 weeks.
For most uncomplicated pregnancies, sex is safe throughout. The baby is well-protected by the amniotic sac, the uterine muscles, and the mucus plug.
Comfortable positions become important in later pregnancy.
Hormonal changes, body changes, anxiety about birth, and changes in lifestyle and identity all affect mental health.
Common feelings include excitement, anxiety, mood swings, sadness, and ambivalence. All are normal.
Antenatal depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and treatable. Talk to your doctor without hesitation. Some medications are safe in pregnancy if needed.
1. Morning sickness: Small frequent meals, ginger, plain biscuits before getting up, avoiding trigger smells.
2. Heartburn: Small frequent meals, avoid spicy and fried foods, do not lie down after eating, sleep with head elevated, antacids if needed (check with doctor).
3. Constipation: Adequate water, fibre, gentle activity, isabgol or stool softeners if needed.
4. Leg cramps: Calcium and magnesium-rich foods, hydration, gentle stretching before bed, warm compress.
5. Back pain: Good posture, supportive shoes, pregnancy belly band, prenatal yoga, sleeping with pillow between knees, avoid heavy lifting.
6. Swollen feet and ankles: Elevate legs when sitting, avoid standing for long periods, drink plenty of water, compression stockings if recommended.
7. Frequent urination: Normal. Do not reduce water intake. Empty the bladder fully each time.
8. Stretch marks: Genetic component. Moisturisers may help with itchiness but cannot prevent stretch marks completely.
9. Breast changes: Wear a supportive bra. Mild discomfort is normal.
10. Hemorrhoids: Adequate water, fibre, avoid straining. Treatment if severe.
Call your doctor or go to the hospital if you have:
Trust your instincts. If something feels seriously wrong, get checked.
In the third trimester, prepare practically and mentally:
The baby's room can wait. The hospital bag and contact list cannot.
