Oily skin — the shiny face, the enlarged pores, the makeup that doesn't last, the constant tissue blotting — is one of the most common skin concerns in India, particularly in young adults in the hot, humid climate. The extra oil (sebum) is produced by overactive sebaceous glands, and while it's partly genetic, it's significantly influenced by hormones, diet, climate, and skincare choices.
Genetics: sebaceous gland size and activity is partly inherited. Some people simply have more and larger oil glands.
Hormones: androgens (testosterone and its derivatives) directly stimulate sebaceous gland activity. This is why oiliness increases at puberty, why women with PCOD often have oilier skin, and why skin tends to become less oily after menopause.
Diet: high glycaemic foods (refined carbohydrates, sugar) raise insulin and IGF-1, both of which stimulate sebum production. Multiple studies link high-GI diets to increased oiliness and acne.
Climate: hot, humid weather (most of India for most of the year) increases sebum production and prevents its evaporation from the skin surface.
Overwashing or over-stripping the skin: using harsh soaps or cleansers strips the skin's natural oils. The skin responds to this by producing more oil to compensate — creating a cycle of stripping and compensatory overproduction.
Wrong products: heavy, occlusive moisturisers and facial oils designed for dry skin can overwhelm oily skin and clog pores.
The goal is to remove excess sebum and buildup without stripping the barrier. Once in the morning and once in the evening.
Cleansers to choose: gel cleansers or foam cleansers with salicylic acid (BHA) — salicylic acid dissolves within the pore and reduces sebum buildup. Good options in India: cleansers with 0.5–2% salicylic acid.
Avoid: bar soaps with high pH (9–10), very strong foaming cleansers, alcohol-based toners as primary cleansers — all strip the barrier and trigger compensatory oil production.
The biggest mistake with oily skin: skipping moisturiser. Without a moisturiser, the skin barrier becomes slightly compromised, and sebaceous glands ramp up oil production. Use a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic gel or water-based moisturiser rather than skipping it.
Ingredients for oily skin moisturisers: hyaluronic acid (provides moisture without oil), niacinamide (reduces sebum production — see below), gel-cream formulations.
5–10% niacinamide serum applied daily reduces sebum production measurably over 4–8 weeks of consistent use. It also reduces pore appearance and has anti-inflammatory effects. One of the most useful ingredients for oily skin.
Applied after cleansing, a salicylic acid toner (1–2%) penetrates into pores and reduces the sebum and dead cell buildup that causes blackheads and pimples. Use 1–2 times daily.
Kaolin and bentonite clay absorb excess oil from the surface and within pores. A 10–15 minute clay mask once or twice weekly reduces visible shine and pore appearance. Available commercially or as raw kaolin clay.
Not skipping sunscreen because of oiliness — UV stimulates sebum and worsens the conditions that drive oily skin. Choose gel sunscreens or matte-finish formulations specifically labelled "non-comedogenic" and "oil-free."
For on-the-go management of excess shine without disturbing makeup or washing. Press (don't rub) blotting paper against shiny areas to absorb surface oil. Quick, effective, harmless.
A light mineral powder (translucent or skin-toned) applied over sunscreen mattifies the finish and reduces shine for several hours.
Oily skin associated with:
...benefits from medical evaluation. Hormonal assessment, PCOD workup, and prescription treatments (oral contraceptives, spironolactone, isotretinoin for severe acne) go beyond what skincare alone achieves.
